Extra Credit Union partnered with Sumo Sweet to develop their college banking program. The program targets college students and high school students transitioning from high school banking accounts with limited features. Students are inundated by offers from large international banks, wooing them with credit cards, lines of credit and access to limitless cash, causing students to encounter financial problems as freshman. The college banking program was developed with all of the functionality of an adult checking account, but without all the risk. Features, such as lines of credit, were modified and lowered so students could try out some of these features without the risk of getting in debt at school.
The simple and direct visual and theme line were created to immediately communicate “college” without using the words college or bank – as credit unions differentiate themselves form traditional “shareholder owned” banks. The theme line supports the bank’s challenge in communicating that although your college might be thousands of miles away, you can access all your banking information any time, and on any technology platform of your choice.
Posters and print design collateral were also developed to support the program. The overall communication stressed that the college checking account would be the foundation to build the students’ future and wealth.
